Therapy for you

Your experiences are unique; your therapy should be too.

Process-based music therapy — a creative space to explore feelings when words might fail or escape us.

The creative space

Music therapy is a form of psychotherapy, primarily non-linguistic, and a powerful place to explore feelings when words aren’t enough. The “process-based” part means we aren’t chasing a fixed playlist of techniques — we attend to what is actually happening between you, the music, and the relationship, moment by moment.

This is a space to begin embodying new experiences, develop new ways of relating to trauma, and try defusion and psychological flexibility work in a medium that can bypass the limits of talk alone.

Music therapy is an HCPC-registered profession: only state-registered practitioners can use the title, with their own code of ethics and conduct.

Underpinned by RFT and ACT

Our clinical work is grounded in Relational Frame Theory (RFT) — the behavioural science of language and cognition that underpins Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Music is highly relational and often pre-verbal; bringing RFT into the music therapy space helps us work with stuck patterns without relying only on narrative.

ACT doesn’t aim to erase difficult feelings. It builds psychological flexibility — the capacity to stay present, loosen the grip of unhelpful stories, and move toward what matters. In sessions that can look like improvisation, songwriting, listening, and structured musical tasks that map onto core ACT processes:

  • Present-moment awareness — musical engagement as an anchor in the here and now
  • Cognitive defusion — using sound and lyric to externalise and untangle from sticky thoughts
  • Values and committed action — exploring musical identity and expression to clarify what matters, and take steps
